Dwayne Morgan of Up from the Roots will be at Regent Park Focus on May 31. Dwayne is a spoken-word artist, probably the best in Toronto. He has had rave reviews from just about everybody. He is one of the main organizers of the Toronto International Poetry Slam. To hear a sample of his work, go to "Up From the Roots." May 31 is a part of our normal get together at the end of every month. Community residents, organizers, friends, and just almost anybody come on down to share at 600 Dundas Street East. We will be pre-recording this show to replay at a later date. Wednesday, May 18

The show broadcasted on May 17th was actually pre-recorded on April 26th, right here at Regent Park Focus, with a live-audience and panelists. Listen to it here: http://www.catchdaflava.com/Radio_20show_20Archive We watched a short film by the two young filmmakers Agazi Afewerki and Mohammed Shafique which talked about the misconceptions many have about the area and the similar biases and prejudices carried to other, more affluent, areas of the city. It was especially exciting since the two are graduates of the Regent Park Focus Film and Video Production program. Afterwards, our panel of speakers spoke about their own experiences living in the community and the reactions from friends and family about their choice for the place call home. A great night! |
